All of Hanna Properties apartments are located
in what is known as the Park Avenue area of Rochester, NY. This
neighborhood, just steps away from Rochester’s most magnificent
street, East Avenue, has a touch of history in its tree-lined
streets and broad boulevards. Some buildings overlook the grounds
of the Rochester Museum and Science Center, a multi-functioning
center for learning and exploration. A short stroll takes you
to the home and gardens of George Eastman, today an internationally-renowned
museum of photography. The area’s other major museums and
art gallery are just blocks away. Cafes and shops line Park Avenue
for the adventure-seeking and those craving that unique something.
ABOUT ROCHESTER
The Falls on the Genesee River in downtown
Rochester -- today a revitalized city neighborhood known as
the Center at High Falls -- attracted investors as far back
as 1803. The prospect of inexpensive power that could turn
a grist mill, then grind wheat into flour, drew wealth and
those seeking it from far away to the city of Rochester. Lake
Ontario and the fertile land of the Finger Lakes region drew
others interested in horticulture. What locals refer to as
Lake Effect, the buffering effect of warm lake waters on cold
northeast winters, allowed the area to flourish as a center
for seed companies and nurseries through the early 1900’s.
Today, that same warming effect encourages grapes to ripen on
the vine on the rolling hills of Western New York. An award-winning,
wine-growing industry now thrives in the Finger Lakes region
where tours of vineyards and wine-tastings attract crowds.
In the 20th century, invention and industry
combined to form Eastman Kodak Co., Bausch & Lomb and Xerox.
Legendary too, is the list of suffrage and equal rights notables
who lived and worked here: Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady
Stanton, and Frederick Douglass. That a city this size continues
to produce innovation and outspoken celebrity; dot.com industries
and high-tech solutions would not have surprised its most-famous
of residents: the innovative George Eastman.
In one of Rochester’s city neighborhoods and on its most
historic boulevard, East Avenue, George Eastman’s Colonial
Revival mansion and gardens have become a Rochester landmark
and today the home of an internationally-renowned museum of photography.
The George Eastman House, bordering the neighborhood of the arts,
is just one of many elegant and revived mansions and homesteads
as you travel east on East Avenue from Alexander Street to Winton
Road.
One block south of East Avenue (from
Alexander Street to Culver Road), the trendy Park Ave. area
draws young professionals after dark, seeking night life and
fine dining. By day, coffeehouses, retro and ethnic dining
and boutique shopping appeal. Pubbing starts at The Old Toad,
277 Alexander Street. For twenty-somethings, try Tonic, 336
East Avenue, an upscale singles bar. For a music club, it’s Monty’s Corner at 355 East Avenue. Exotic
beers and martinis are shaken not stirred upstairs at the Blueroom,
293 Alexander. Downstairs dart boards and pool tables make this
club a casual place to meet. Going Italian? Head for Bacco’s,
263 Park Avenue. Down the street at 650 Park Avenue, stop by
the Park Avenue Pub where great food can be shared among friends.
Just across the street, First Taste Grill grills it up 70’s
style with an ethnic flair for lunch and dinner.
Want to shop until you drop? Parkleigh,
the anchor of Park Ave. shopping, is an emporium of home and
body furnishings on the corner of Park and South Goodman. Once
a corner pharmacy, Parkleigh has evolved into a fashionable
Godiva chocolatier with a fine array of Crabtree & Evelyn fragrances, Ellen Tracy clothing,
and assorted nonessentials. Its newest neighbor, American Harvest Co.,
makes a mean brew. If you want to see in style, there’s
One Hip Chic just across the street for the most contemporary
eyewear on the planet.
For bohemian style, try the colorful
stretch of Monroe Avenue between South Goodman and Field Streets.
Sip fresh carrot juice at Aladdin’s Natural Eatery, or
your favorite grind at Starbucks. Browse for imported clothing and goods at Archimage and Skyehigh.
Just blocks from the Park Avenue area, The Little Theater shows
independent films in five theaters at its recently expanded location
on East Avenue. The Dryden Theater at the International Museum
of Photography plays vintage films year round.
Summer festivals draw big crowds to the city.
Rochester is home to the world-class Eastman School of Music;
a highly-recognized medical school at the University of Rochester;
national league sports teams - the Amerks and Rhinos, fabulous
golf courses and pro skiing.
